Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 637, also known as the .38 Chiefs Special Airweight Stainless, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, built on the round butt alloy J-frame with three-screw construction. It was offered with a 1 7/8-inch barrel and configured as a lightweight defensive revolver, emphasizing ease of carry and practical reliability. Standard features include a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight paired with a square-notch rear sight, allowing for refined sight alignment, along with a five-shot fluted cylinder measuring approximately 1.53 inches in early production and 1.59 inches in later variants. The revolver was originally fitted with walnut Magna-style grips bearing Smith & Wesson medallions. The Model 637 featured a .312" smooth trigger and a .240" hammer, both finished in satin, providing a balance of control and consistent operation. Additional features include a contoured thumbpiece, a new-style yoke retention system, and a frame thickness of approximately 0.538 inches, with an overall weight of around 13.5 oz. The Smith & Wesson trademark is found on the frame under the thumbpiece and on the sideplate, with “Airweight” markings appearing on later models. Initial production consisted of a limited run of approximately 500 revolvers in 1989. The model was reintroduced in 1996 with an updated design featuring a new J Magnum frame with a three-screw construction and rated for .38 Special +P. Other changes included a MIM flat face hammer utilizing a floating firing pin, a new MIM thumbpiece, a slightly longer frame with the cylinder stop machined as part of the frame, a change to the extractor system, changes in the hollow "MIM" trigger and "MIM" hammer, and a longer 5-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal of 1.59".
