Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 640-3 is a compact J-frame, five-shot snub-nose revolver with an enclosed (concealed) hammer and double-action-only trigger, built with stainless-steel components and typically fitted with a short (about 2.1-2.125") barrel and fixed sights. It’s rated to shoot .357 Magnum (and .38 Special/+P), which makes it unusually potent for a J-frame snub; the standard configuration emphasizes durability and simplicity for a small, easily carried defensive firearm. Smith & Wesson created the 640 line to give shooters a true compact .357 option — essentially packing magnum power into the company’s long-running Centennial/J-frame platform for concealed carry and backup use. The 640’s design traces directly to the Centennial (the enclosed-hammer “Model 40” family) and represents S&W’s response to demand in the 1990s for a carry gun that could deliver higher terminal performance than a typical .38 Special snub while remaining small enough for deep concealment. To safely handle the hotter .357 loads in such a small package, S&W reinforced areas of the small frame (notably forward of the cylinder release) and kept the action rugged and simple. The “-3” dash in 640-3 marks one of the company’s engineering/production changes — most notably the addition of Smith & Wesson’s internal lock during the early 2000s — and distinguishes later production runs from earlier pre-lock examples. Over time the basic 640 platform spawned Pro/Performance Center versions and lighter alloy or scandium-framed siblings, but the stainless 640 remains prized for its solid weight (which helps tame recoil), compact concealability, and the rare combination of true .357 capability in a J-frame package. That mix of power, robustness, and familiarity (the 640 shares the Centennial look and handling traits collectors and CCW users know) explains why it has remained a notable entry in S&W’s snub revolver lineup.
