Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 642 is a modern evolution of the company’s long-running Centennial line of concealed-hammer revolvers, tracing its roots back to the original Centennial models introduced in 1952 to commemorate Smith & Wesson’s 100th anniversary. The 642 was introduced in 1990 as part of the Airweight Centennial series, designed to offer a lightweight, snag-free defensive revolver suitable for discreet carry. Chambered in .38 Special and rated for +P ammunition, the Model 642 features an enclosed hammer double-action-only (DAO) design, which eliminates the risk of snagging on clothing and emphasizes simplicity and reliability. Its satin silver appearance comes from a stainless steel barrel and cylinder paired with an aluminum alloy frame finished to resemble stainless steel, blending corrosion resistance with reduced weight.

Produced from 1990 to the present, the Model 642 has become one of Smith & Wesson’s most popular concealed-carry revolvers, widely favored by law enforcement officers, backup gun users, and private citizens alike. Built on the small J-frame, it typically features a 1 7/8-inch barrel, fixed sights, and a five-shot cylinder, keeping the weight around 15 ounces unloaded. Over the years, minor internal updates—such as frame-mounted firing pins and internal locking mechanisms on later examples—have modernized the design while retaining its core attributes. Today, the 642 is appreciated not only as a practical personal-defense firearm but also as a continuation of Smith & Wesson’s Centennial legacy, embodying decades of refinement in compact revolver design.
