The Smith & Wesson Model 645 is a noteworthy and collectible example of American semi-automatic pistol design from the mid-1980s, marking Smith & Wesson’s first commercial foray into a factory-made .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun. Produced in relatively limited numbers from 1985 until 1988, the 645 is part of the company’s second-generation auto pistol lineup and is built almost entirely from stainless steel, giving it exceptional corrosion resistance and a solid, substantial feel in the hand. Chambered for the venerable .45 ACP cartridge, it uses an 8-round single-stack magazine and operates via a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) system with a slide-mounted safety/decocker, allowing the first shot to be fired from a long DA pull and subsequent shots with a lighter SA trigger press; this configuration also enhances safe carry and handling by blending revolver-style decocking with a stout defensive caliber. Visually, the 645 reflects its era with a squared trigger guard, black plastic grip panels, and fixed three-dot sights, and its five-inch barrel and full-size frame give it a balance and presence similar to classic Government-length pistols while offering the added benefits of stainless construction and modern safety features.
