Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 645 is a second-generation semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP, introduced in 1985 as part of the company’s effort to modernize its large-caliber lineup. Built almost entirely from stainless steel, the 645 was designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, making it an exceptionally durable and reliable sidearm. It features a 5-inch barrel, textured synthetic grips with S&W logos, and fixed rear sights paired with a ramped serrated red-insert front sight for quick target acquisition. The pistol’s robust construction, combined with its straightforward design, made it a popular choice among both law enforcement and civilian shooters during its production run.

Though it was discontinued in 1988, the Model 645 remains a noteworthy pistol within Smith & Wesson’s history, serving as a precursor to the later 4500-series handguns. Its all-stainless construction distinguished it from its sibling, the Model 745, which featured a blued slide and was oriented more toward competition shooting. The 645, by contrast, embodied durability and practicality, offering shooters a dependable .45 ACP platform with classic styling and rugged performance. Today, it is appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts as a solid example of Smith & Wesson’s transitional designs in the 1980s.
