The Smith & Wesson BG38—more commonly marketed as part of the M&P Bodyguard 38 line—is a compact, lightweight double-action-only revolver designed specifically for deep concealment and close-range defensive use, chambered in .38 Special +P and built around a modern, mixed-material construction that sets it apart from traditional Smith & Wesson J-frames. It typically features a 1.875-inch stainless steel barrel, a stainless steel cylinder with a five-round capacity, and a frame that combines an aluminum alloy upper structure with a polymer grip frame assembly, keeping overall weight extremely low while maintaining sufficient strength for defensive ammunition. One of its defining traits is its internal hammer, DAO-only trigger system, which produces a long, consistent trigger pull on every shot, with no single-action capability, enhancing safety in concealed-carry situations by reducing the likelihood of accidental discharge while also simplifying operation under stress.
