The Smith & Wesson M&P45 Massachusetts State Police Edition is a rare and highly collectible variant of the company’s popular M&P45 semi-automatic pistol. Originally produced for the Massachusetts State Police in 2011, this edition features a unique set of characteristics that distinguish it from standard production models. Chambered in .45 ACP, the pistol is built on Smith & Wesson’s full-size polymer frame and features a 4-inch barrel, making it suitable for both duty use and personal defense. It incorporates white 3-dot sights for fast target acquisition, and the slide is finished in matte black with a robust corrosion-resistant coating. State Police” marking on the left side of the slide, a detail that pays homage to its intended role as the official sidearm of one of the nation's oldest law enforcement agencies. Interestingly, despite a large order placed by the MSP, these pistols were never issued for duty use—allegedly due to concerns involving the slide during final evaluation. As a result, many of the pistols remained unissued and were later sold as "new-in-box" surplus units. These editions were built without a manual safety or magazine disconnect, and they shipped with three 10-round magazines, adhering to Massachusetts' capacity regulations. Today, these MSP-marked M&P45s are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their limited production, agency-specific branding, and unissued condition—offering a distinctive blend of historical context and proven .45-caliber performance.
