The Smith & Wesson Model 1, 2nd Issue is a historically significant rimfire pocket revolver that played a pivotal role in the early development of modern handguns and firmly established Smith & Wesson as a major force in the American arms industry. Produced from 1860 to 1868, the 2nd Issue represents an improved iteration of the original Model 1 and is chambered for the then-revolutionary .22 Short rimfire cartridge, which was among the first commercially successful self-contained metallic cartridges. Built on a small tip-up frame design, the revolver allows the barrel to pivot upward for loading and unloading, exposing the seven-shot cylinder, a feature that was innovative for its time and well-suited to compact personal defense use. The Model 1, 2nd Issue typically features a round barrel (often around 3 inches), a spur trigger without a trigger guard, and either brass or silver-plated frames, with barrels commonly finished in blue. Grips were usually rosewood, sometimes checkered, and fitted closely to the diminutive frame. Mechanically simple yet groundbreaking, the revolver’s true importance lies in its association with Rollin White’s bored-through cylinder patent, which Smith & Wesson exclusively licensed, giving the company a major competitive advantage and shaping the future of revolver design. Widely carried during the American Civil War era by civilians and soldiers alike as a backup or personal protection arm, the Smith & Wesson Model 1, 2nd Issue is today highly valued by collectors not only for its age and mechanical charm, but for its foundational role in the transition from percussion firearms to cartridge-firing revolvers in American firearms history.
