Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 14 (originally sold as the K-38 Target Masterpiece) is a medium-frame, six-shot double-action revolver built on S&W’s K-frame and purpose-designed for precision target shooting. Introduced in 1947 and renumbered Model 14 in 1957 when S&W adopted its numeric system, the gun was offered primarily with long, heavy barrels—most commonly 6" and 8 3/8"—and fitted with adjustable target sights, a target hammer/trigger geometry, and finely tuned lockwork intended to deliver the consistent trigger break and sight radius that bullseye shooters demanded. S&W built the Model 14 to serve the competitive and target shooting market that used full-power .38 Special loads: it was the centerfire “target” counterpart to the smallbore and .32 target masterpieces (Models 17 and 16) and shared the K-frame’s balance and handling. The heavy barrels, target sights and careful timing made it well suited to NRA Precision Pistol and other bullseye formats, and its accuracy and ergonomics led to occasional adoption by police units for duty or training roles where a long-range, accurate revolver was useful. Over time the Model 14 went through the usual S&W engineering dash-changes (dash numbers) and a handful of unusual production variants—small batches with 4" or 5" barrels, single-action-only Masterpiece runs in 1961–62, and dealer-blocked “Dayton” 4" special runs that created a well-known subset for collectors. Production originally ran roughly 1947–1982, and the model was later reintroduced intermittently (1991–1999 and again in modern limited editions), with later dash changes reflecting frame and manufacturing updates such as moving the firing pin to the frame.
