Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 59 is a watershed American “wonder-nine” — a 9×19mm, double-action/single-action, high-capacity semi-automatic that grafted a wider, anodized aluminum frame to the proven single-stack Model 39 design so it could accept a staggered double-column magazine. Introduced commercially in 1971, the M59 carried a factory 14-round magazine (and later magazines and variants pushed capacities higher), a roughly 4-inch barrel, a blued carbon-steel slide, and a grip built from three-piece molded panels with a metal backstrap; these features made it one of the first domestic pistols to combine a true service-size frame with large magazine capacity. In use the Model 59 earned praise for bringing reliable DA/SA ergonomics, a stout lockup and the practical advantage of expanded firepower to law-enforcement and sporting users while remaining straightforward to maintain: its controls are familiar to anyone used to mid-century service pistols, parts commonality with later S&W lines improved support, and a number of government trials (including early Navy evaluations of high-capacity 9 mm platforms) helped shape its development and reputation. The tradeoffs are the usual ones for early wonder-nines — slightly wider grip profile compared with single-stack designs, a heavier feel than compact duty pistols, and the need for proper training to manage the DA/SA transition — but its influence is clear: the M59 helped establish the template for American large-capacity service pistols and directly led to subsequent S&W models (for example, the Model 459/5900 series) that refined sights, finishes and ergonomics for later decades.
