Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 1/2 Old Model, also known as the Model One-and-a-Half, First Issue, is a single-action revolver chambered in .32 Rimfire. Built on a tip-up (bottom-break) frame, it features a 5-shot, non-fluted cylinder and a spur trigger without a trigger guard, with no safety or half-cock notches. Standard barrels were 3 1/2-inch octagonal, while a 4-inch octagonal barrel was later offered and is considered rare. This model is the only tip-up revolver to feature the cylinder stop located in the bottom strap of the frame. The frame and barrel are made of steel and were fitted for the .32 Short Rimfire, though they will also chamber and fire the .32 Long Rimfire cartridge. Sights consist of a round blade front sight driven into the barrel rib and a rear sight notch cut into the hammer thumb piece. A removable sideplate is located on the left side of the frame. The revolver was typically finished in blue or nickel, with silver plating available by special order. Frames were produced with a square butt and fitted with rosewood grips as standard, while ivory or pearl grips could be ordered as upgrades.

A small number of revolvers are marked “2D QUALITY,” indicating minor casting flaws that did not affect function. Most parts are believed to have been manufactured by King & Smith in Middletown, Connecticut, with final assembly completed in Springfield, Massachusetts. Barrel markings commonly read “Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass. Pat’d Apr. 3rd, 1855 and July 5th, 1859,” with the additional patent date “Nov. 21, 1865” appearing on examples after approximately serial number 15,304. Serial numbers range from 1 to approximately 26,300, with total production estimated at nearly 26,300 revolvers, manufactured circa 1865 to 1868.
