The Smith & Wesson Performance Center 460XVR Compensated Hunter is a powerhouse double/single-action revolver chambered in the formidable .460 S&W Magnum, with added versatility to also fire .45 Colt and .454 Casull cartridges. Introduced in late summer of 2005, this enhanced Performance Center variant is built on Smith & Wesson’s robust “X” frame, constructed from stainless steel with a bead-blasted finish for durability and style. The 460XVR featured a 10-1/2" (other barrel lengths were available) barrel with a barrel-mounted compensator to tame recoil, along with a green Hi-Viz interchangeable front sight and fully adjustable black-outline rear sight for precise targeting. The five-shot fluted cylinder measures 2.3" and includes a ball detent lockup for enhanced alignment and security. A factory-installed Weaver-style scope mount sits atop the barrel, ready for optics, while the Hogue grip aids in absorbing recoil.

Distinctive markings include “Performance Center” on the barrel’s left side and “460 S&W Magnum” on the right. It comes equipped with a flash-chromed hammer, a 0.312" trigger, and an internal lock. The 10-1/2" model weighs in at 82.5 ounces and comes with Uncle Mike’s detachable sling with swivels. A 6-1/2" version also exists, weighing 70.5 ounces, and doesn't feature the sling mounts. Additionally, a rare 7-1/2" model was produced for Ellett Brothers in late 2005, featuring a black finish, stainless fluted cylinder, Lothar-Walther custom German rifle barrel with integrated Weaver rail, and a special EBD0001–EBD0500 serial range.
At SHOT Show 2006, the Performance Center introduced two further 460 variants with fluted Lothar-Walther barrels, removable Patridge front sights, black rear sights, Hogue grips, sling mounts, and top-and-bottom Picatinny-style rail sections—continuing the line’s legacy of high-performance hunting revolvers.
