Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield occupies a pivotal place in American firearms history, representing the U.S. Army’s transition from cap-and-ball revolvers to modern metallic-cartridge sidearms. Adopted initially in .44 S&W American caliber in 1870, the Model 3 became the first standard-issue cartridge-firing revolver in U.S. military service, offering significant advantages in speed, reliability, and resistance to adverse weather. In 1875, refinements developed by Major George W. Schofield led to the adoption of the improved Schofield revolver, which utilized Smith & Wesson’s proprietary .45 Schofield cartridge rather than the longer .45 Colt. Though ultimately phased out as revolver technology evolved, the Schofield’s innovative top-break action, automatic extraction, and battlefield practicality secured its enduring reputation as one of the most important military revolvers of the 19th century.

That legacy was revived in 2000 when the Smith & Wesson Performance Center reintroduced the Schofield as a limited-edition modern reproduction, blending historic design with contemporary manufacturing techniques. This Model 2000 Schofield in .45 Schofield features a six-shot, top-break action, 5-inch barrel, Bright Blue finish, and case-colored controls, paired with smooth walnut grips, creating an elegant yet authentic tribute to the original. After decades of developmental planning and technical challenges, the Performance Center’s skilled craftsmen successfully recreated the intricate mechanics and aesthetics of the classic Schofield, culminating in a highly refined revolver that honors 125 years of history. The Wells Fargo Edition, distinguished by its “WFE” serial prefix and special configuration, further enhances its collectibility, making it a standout example of how modern craftsmanship can respectfully preserve and celebrate iconic American firearm heritage.
