Item Description
This revolver is VERY RARE and originally served as a British Service Revolver, built with a 5" barrel and chambered in .38 S&W, and was shipped overseas for military use. Following the war, it was heavily modified by parties other than Smith & Wesson, primarily small machine shops in the United States, to make it more appealing to the civilian market. These alterations included cutting the barrel down to 2 3/8", reaming the cylinder, plugging the lanyard swivel hole, refinishing the gun in nickel, and fitting it with early postwar Magna stocks.
The markings present on this revolver are British proof marks, applied in accordance with British law when the firearm was released from military service for commercial sale. These can be found on the underside of the barrel and on the cylinder, serving as a clear indication of its military origins and subsequent civilian conversion. This example reflects the common postwar practice of adapting surplus service arms for the American marketplace.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Pre-Victory Model, chambered in .38 S&W and built on the robust K-frame, is a notable wartime revolver distinguished by its “V” prefix serial number, which signified “Victory.” These examples featured the standard 5" barrel, a length favored by the British Commonwealth forces to which many of these revolvers were shipped under Lend-Lease during World War II. Known for their durability and straightforward double-action design, these revolvers played a significant role in arming Allied troops and support personnel. The Pre-Victory retained a blued finish early in production before transitioning to a wartime Parkerized style for improved corrosion resistance.
