Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
According to the included Kopec Letter,
"We have today examined your Colt U.S. Cavalry revolver for the purpose of authentication. This revolver #17075 was previously listed in our survey and falls between #17073 (an Artillery revolver) and #17092 (a Cavalry revolver) in this data-base. This revolver was manufactured during 1875 and was ordnance sub-inspected by both A.P. Casey (The principal Sub-Inspector in Charge) and W.W. Johnson his assistant sub-inspector. The various components of this revolver were sub-inspected by one or the other of these inspectors. We find that only the triggerguard had been sub-inspected by W.W. Johnson (J) while all of the other parts (except the cylinder) display the tiny initial "c" of A.P. Casey. Although the sub-inspector's initial has worn from the cylinder, it would be the opinion of this writer that it too had been sub-inspected by A.P. Casey.
Historically, we could not locate this revolver's serial number in the National Archives records available to us. We do however note that this revolver's serial number #17075 falls between #17004 a revolver belonging to "Troop C, 5th Cavalry" as of August 17, 1886 and #17128 a revolver which had been issued to "Troop F, 7th Cavalry" as of July 12, 1888. There are several other Seventh Cavalry examples represented from within this general serial number range.
These include; #16850, #17403, #17432, #17492, #17586 and #17647. The entry for the revolver #17492 actually shows the issue date for this group as October 3, 1876.
This issue date is quite sisnificant as it represents the exact date for this issue to these Seventh Cavalry replacement troops. This occurred just some three months after the famous Custer Battle. These new recruits had gathered in Bismarck, Dakota Territory to await their individual assignments. Some of these recruits were assigned to other regiments, but those which had been specifically assigned to the Seventh Cavalry were nicknamed by the citizens of Bismarck the "CUSTER AVENGERS". We know that there had been 237 men lost at the Little Bighorn, so there may have been at least this quantity of new recruits assigned to this reorganized unit, each of which received one of these new 1875 manufactured revolvers. Sadly, only nineteen of these issues are recorded in these National Archives records. There is therefore a good possibility that our subject Cavalry revolver #17075 had also been issued to one of these "Custer Avengers". Nonetheless, this revolver had been issued in plenty of time to have experienced active engagement during the Indian Wars period.
This revolver appears to be in very good overall original condition. No original finish remains except for a patch of bright blue remaining on the barrel under the ejector tube. All markings (except for the cylinder inspector's initial) remain in perfect order. The barrel address remains very good showing the three correct die-breaks for this serial number range. The grips remain original, showing the scars of age, along with three old repairs. Some minor light rust pitting appears on the barrel just ahead of the barrel address. This revolver displays no evidence of ever being buffed or abused. We have enjoyed reviewing this interesting Indian Wars Cavalry revolver."
