Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This example is the HIGHLY COVETED Indian War Era Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army. The revolver has the standard patina military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap and casehardened frame and hammer. The one-piece, oiled walnut grip has the date, "1877" stamped above the acceptance mark of Ordnance Inspector Lt. David A. Lyle (script letters "DAL") on the lower left side. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the script initials "JTC" (Ordnance Sub-Inspector John T. Cleveland). The revolver has the original Cavalry pattern hammer with extended checkering on the spur. The top of the barrel is marked with the "Second Style Condensed Block Letter Address: "-COLT"S PT. F.A. M.F.G. Co HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.-" The left side of the frame is stamped with the "three date/three line" patent marking followed by "U.S." The full serial number, "35563", is located on the barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard and back strap and all of the visible serial numbers match.
The very first production Single Action Army, serial number 1, thought lost for many years after its production, was found in a barn in Nashua, New Hampshire, in the early 1900s. This gun was chambered in .44 S&W, a centerfire design containing charges of up to 40 grains (2.6 g) of fine-grained black powder and a 255-grain (16.5 g) blunt roundnosed bullet. Relative to period cartridges and most later handgun rounds, it was quite powerful in its full loading.
Condition and Contents:
This is the Coveted Colt Single Action Army, produced in 1877 and accepted for U.S. service by ordnance inspector John T. Cleveland. Serial numbers on the frame, cylinder, backstrap, and trigger guard match. The gun is mechanically functional. The cylinder has slight side to side play in full lockup, with very minimal endshake. The gun has achieved a pleasing patina over the past 146 years. "J.T.C." inspector mark (Ordnance Sub-Inspector John T. Cleveland) stamped on grips, cylinder, frame, barrel. Other sub inspectors marks. "U.S." on frame by patent dates...even though according to the factory letter this example shipped to a commercial vendor. "1877" stamped above the acceptance mark of Ordnance Inspector Lt. David A. Lyle (script letters "DAL") on the lower left side.
