Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
For those seeking a rifle worthy of big-game hunting in the spirit of the "Old West" with the same ruggedness as Teddy Roosevelt’s own firearm, this exemplary Winchester Model 1876 "Third Model" is a remarkable choice. Chambered in the powerful .40-60 Winchester caliber, this fine specimen features a 28-inch octagon barrel and a full-length magazine tube, identifying it as the Sporting Rifle variant of the 1876 Centennial Model. While Roosevelt’s own Model 1876 featured a half-octagonal barrel and half-length magazine tube with more ornate detailing, this rifle is a more utilitarian, yet highly capable, version that was well-suited for big-game hunting during the era.The Winchester Model 1876, also known as the Centennial Model, was designed as a more robust rifle compared to its predecessors, the Winchester 1866 and Winchester 1873, famously referred to as the "Guns that Won the West." The 1876 featured a stronger frame and was chambered for powerful centerfire cartridges, making it suitable for large game hunting, unlike earlier models which were chambered for smaller, handgun-sized rimfire or centerfire rounds. Though it shared some design features with the Model 1873, the 1876 was based on a prototype 1868 lever-action rifle that was never commercially produced. Introduced to commemorate the American Centennial Exposition, the Model 1876 quickly earned a reputation for durability and power. It was offered in four main variants: the 22-inch Carbine, 26-inch Express Rifle with a half-length magazine, 28-inch Sporting Rifle, and 32-inch Musket. Standard models were finished in blue, while deluxe versions were casehardened.
