Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The BSA & M Co. Martini-Henry rifle is a classic example of late 19th-century British military firearms, originally chambered in .577/.450 and built on the sturdy Martini falling-block action. BSA & M Co. produced various marks of the Martini-Henry—including the Mk I, Mk II, Mk III, and Mk IV—each representing refinements in design and production quality. The Mk III in particular saw widespread service across the British Empire and was later widely converted for civilian use. One of the most notable conversion specialists was W.W. Greener, a renowned British gunsmith who transformed surplus Martini-Henry, Martini-Metford, and Martini-Enfield rifles into high-quality training and target rifles. These conversions were often rebarreled to smaller calibers like .22 rimfire or .310 Cadet and used by the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs, the National Rifle Association, and even Post Office rifle clubs. Some rifles, including the BSA Martini Mk III, were also converted to intermediate calibers like .303 British by firms such as International Military Antiques. In rarer cases, Martini rifles originally converted to .22 caliber have been rebarreled back to larger calibers by modern gunsmiths.
