Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 1870 rifle and carbine were improvements over the earlier Trapdoor Springfield models, but the .50-70 Government cartridge they used proved less than ideal. In 1872, a trial was conducted to select a new standard rifle and carbine for the U.S. Army's infantry and cavalry units. By 1873, slightly modified versions of the Model 1870, now chambered for the newly developed .45-70 Government cartridge, were approved for adoption. This cartridge, with its 70 grains of black powder and a 405-grain lead bullet, offered superior ballistics compared to the .50-70 Government. A specialized carbine cartridge with the same 405-grain bullet but only 55 grains of powder was also introduced to reduce recoil.

The new rifles and carbines featured a blued finish, replacing the “National Armory Bright” finish of the Trapdoor Springfields. The Model 1873 bayonet was introduced alongside the rifle, repurposed from the large stock of Model 1855 bayonets left over from the Civil War. These older bayonets were retrofitted with a “cold-pressing” process to fit the smaller-diameter .45-70 barrels and were also blued.
Both the Model 1873 rifles and carbines bore markings on their breechblocks reading “U.S. Model 1873” with “U.S. Springfield” and a “spread eagle” insignia. The rifles featured a stock with a “short comb/thin wrist” and a solid buttplate, similar to the earlier Trapdoor models. These stocks were marked with an “ESA” inspection stamp, denoting Erskine S. Allin.
The rear sight was adjustable for elevation but fixed for windage, and the carbine retained the “swivel bar and ring” assembly from the Model 1870 carbine. Additionally, the Model 1873 carbine included a barrel band with a stacking swivel. In total, 216,230 Model 1873 rifles, 20,028 Model 1873 carbines, and 8,588 Model 1873 Cadet Rifles (used at West Point and other military academies) were produced.
