Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this incredible trap-door single-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1884!

According to a note sent by the owner, During the 1960s, he worked in a ballistics laboratory at Hercules Powder Co. in Kenvil, NJ. During the course of his work, he came across five crates labeled "SPRINGFIELD FIREARMS." Upon opening the crates, he discovered five Springfield "TRAPDOOR" rifles still wrapped and coated in protective COSMOLINE. After numerous discussions with his bosses, it was decided that they would each get one but had to pay HERCULES the sum of $1.00 in order to make it legal (one boss got two of them of course). This is the one he received. (it did not have a side plate, which was later obtained from "Shooters Bible," a gun company catalog that sold parts for antique rifles at that time ). It has only been fired twice (after he first got it) with rounds hand-loaded by himself. It has never been circulated. So, it resided mostly in one of his closets for more than 60 years.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1884 was one of the last significant iterations of the "Trapdoor" Springfield rifle series. While other versions of the "Trapdoor" Springfield were produced after 1884, the Model 1884 represented the final major redesign before the Springfield Armory shifted its focus to the development of the Krag-Jørgensen rifle in the 1890s. The Model 1884 was based on the earlier Model 1873 Trapdoor, incorporating elements from its predecessors. While the Model 1884 retained much of the same appearance as the Model 1873, it featured several important improvements, including refinements to the breechblock and lock mechanism, as well as a new serrated trigger for better control. The Model 1884 saw widespread use in several significant conflicts, although its numbers were far fewer than those of earlier rifles like the Model 1861 Rifled Musket.

Notably, the Springfield Model 1884 was used during the Indian Wars (roughly 1862–1890), the Spanish-American War (1898), and the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), where it was valued for its reliability, though by the end of the 19th century, it was being replaced by more modern repeating rifles.
