Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Gewehr 88, or Model 1888 Commission Rifle, was adopted by the German Empire in 1888 as a bolt-action infantry rifle developed by the German Rifle Commission in response to the French Lebel and the advent of smokeless-powder ammunition. It was originally chambered for the Patrone 88 cartridge. In the mid-1890s, the Army revised the rifle’s bore and groove specifications, and many rifles were subsequently regrooved to match the updated dimensions. After the adoption of the S-Patrone in 1903, large numbers of Gewehr 88 rifles were modified to use the new 7.92×57mm cartridge and were marked with an “S” on the receiver. Beginning around 1905, many rifles underwent further conversion into the 88/05 configuration, which included Mauser-style stripper-clip guides and updated the magazine system for clip loading. During World War I, a simplified wartime pattern, the 88/14, also emerged. Substantial quantities of 88/05 rifles were shipped to the Ottoman Empire during the war, where they commonly received local markings, including Eastern Arabic numerals on sights and receivers.

In the 1930s, Turkish arsenals undertook major modernization work on surviving rifles—typically removing the barrel jacket, updating stocks and sights, and in many cases rebarreling to the standard 7.92x57mm service round—producing rebuilt patterns often referred to in collector literature as “88/05/35” or “/38.” Due to the Gewehr 88 family's repeated modifications, reissues, and foreign service, surviving examples display a wide range of configurations and markings.
