Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1887 and Model 1901 lever-action shotguns represent significant contributions by American gun designer John Browning and the Winchester Repeating Arms Company during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Model 1887, famously seen in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, was a pioneering design as one of the earliest successful repeating shotguns. Initially, Browning advocated for a more modern pump-action mechanism, better suited for a shotgun's rapid fire capabilities. However, Winchester, renowned for their lever-action rifles like the Model 1873, insisted on maintaining brand consistency and opted for Browning's innovative lever-action design. This decision resulted in the Model 1887, which featured a breech-loading, rolling block lever-action mechanism. Despite initial limitations with black powder propellant, Winchester offered both 10 and 12-gauge versions of the Model 1887, accommodating shells of different lengths—2 5/8" for the 12-gauge and 2 7/8" for the 10-gauge.
The Model 1887 typically came with a standard 30" barrel, though a longer 32" option was available upon special order. Winchester also introduced a shorter 20" barrel version in 1888, catering to different shooting preferences and needs. Furthermore, the company offered variants with Damascus barrels, enhancing the shotgun's appeal and versatility. Browning's influence would later lead Winchester to adopt his pump-action design with the introduction of the Model 1893 (later known as the Model 1897), marking a significant shift in firearm technology towards more efficient and powerful smokeless powder shotshells. This transition underscored Winchester's willingness to adapt and innovate, ultimately solidifying their reputation as pioneers in the firearms industry during a period of rapid technological advancement.
