Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1887 shotgun holds a unique place in firearms history as one of the earliest successful repeating shotguns. Designed by the legendary John Moses Browning and introduced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1887, it was revolutionary for combining the repeating mechanism of a lever-action rifle with a shotgun platform—a concept that had not been widely attempted before. Browning originally recommended a pump-action design for a repeating shotgun, considering it more mechanically suitable, but Winchester, already famous for their lever-action rifles, insisted on a lever-action format to maintain brand identity. The result was the Model 1887, chambered initially for 12-gauge black powder shells and later available in 10-gauge. Its robust rolling block action and exposed hammer made it durable, though its operation was complex compared to later designs. The shotgun featured barrel lengths ranging from 20 to 32 inches, catering to various civilian, law enforcement, and sporting uses. As smokeless powder became standard in the 1890s, the Model 1887’s design proved less capable of handling the higher pressures, leading Winchester to develop the improved Model 1901.

The Model 1901 was essentially a stronger version of the 1887, only chambered in 10-gauge, as Winchester wanted to avoid competing with its own Model 1897 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun. Although production of the Model 1887 ceased in 1899, its distinctive profile and operation left a lasting legacy, gaining renewed cultural fame in modern times through films and video games such as Terminator 2 and Call of Duty, where its dramatic lever-action reload has captivated firearm enthusiasts and pop culture fans alike.
