Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1890 is a landmark in the evolution of rimfire rifles, combining John Moses Browning's innovative design with Winchester's manufacturing prowess. Developed as a replacement for the Model 1873, which had underperformed in its rimfire version, the Model 1890 was designed to fill a niche for a reliable, accurate repeating rifle chambered in .22 caliber. By June 1888, the patent was granted to John and Matthew Browning, and the resulting rifle would go on to become the most successful repeating rimfire rifle produced by Winchester. With approximately 775,000 units manufactured between 1890 and 1932, the Model 1890 set the standard for versatility and performance in small-game hunting, plinking, and shooting galleries, earning it the nickname “gallery gun.” Its initial success can be attributed to its innovative slide-action mechanism, offering a smooth, repeatable action that made it ideal for rapid fire and consistent performance.

The Model 1890 was produced in three distinct versions, each refining and enhancing the original design. The first model, produced between 1890 and 1892, featured a solid frame, case-hardened receiver, and a fixed rear sight, with about 15,552 units produced. The second model introduced a takedown design and an adjustable rear sight, marking a significant shift in ease of transport and customization. It was manufactured in two phases: first with a case-hardened receiver and later transitioning to a blued frame after the production of approximately 100,000 units. The third model, which came after 1906, further modified the receiver to allow the breech bolt to lock externally, enhancing the rifle's safety and reliability. Additionally, both the second and third models were offered in deluxe versions with fancy checkered walnut stocks and grooved slide handles, catering to more discerning shooters and collectors. In 1919, Winchester simplified its naming convention, dropping the "18" and "19" from the model numbers, so the Model 1890 became the Model 90—a testament to its lasting legacy in Winchester’s catalog.
