Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Revolver d’Ordonnance Modèle 1892, developed and produced by the Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS), was adopted as the standard French military service revolver to replace the earlier Mle 1873. Following the introduction of smokeless powder into French small-arms service, the Mle 1892 reflected the Army’s effort to modernize its sidearms alongside the Lebel rifle. Limited early production began in 1892, with full-scale manufacture commencing in 1893 and continuing through World War I. Production was reduced during the conflict as priority shifted to rifle manufacture and emergency procurement of automatic pistols such as the Spanish-made Ruby. Chambered for the 8mm French Ordnance (8×27mmR) smokeless cartridge, the Mle 1892 is a six-shot, double-action/single-action revolver built on a solid frame. It features a barrel length of approximately 4.6 inches, an overall length of about 9.25 inches, and a weight of roughly 1.8 lbs. The revolver is fitted with a blade front sight and a notch rear sight. The right-side-swinging cylinder is released by operating the loading gate, and a simultaneous ejector allows spent cases to be removed manually.

Approximately 350,000 revolvers were manufactured between 1892 and 1924. While originally intended for officers and specialist troops, the Mle 1892 saw widespread service across the French Army, Navy, Gendarmerie, and colonial forces, remaining the official service revolver until the gradual introduction of the Mle 1935 automatic pistols. It continued to see military, police, and reserve use through World War II and into the late 1940s, earning a reputation for high manufacturing quality, mechanical precision, and durability despite the modest performance of its cartridge. Today, they remain collectible firearms, prized by military historians and collectors for their historical significance and craftsmanship.
