Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 1894 is a lever-action repeating rifle that debuted in 1894, created by the Marlin Firearms Company in North Haven, Connecticut. It was originally patented on August 1, 1893, by L.L. Hepburn. This design improved upon previous models by simplifying and reinforcing the internal lever-action mechanism while retaining a flat solid steel top receiver with side ejection. Notably, the Model 1894 eliminated the rear-locking lug that extended into the trigger guard, which had been prone to pinching the shooter's fingers during rapid cycling. Among its enhancements over the Model 1889 were a one-piece trigger and a two-piece firing pin designed to prevent accidental discharges unless the finger lever was fully closed or the locking lug was absent. The finger lever lock found in the Model 1889 was replaced with an integrated latch in the lever itself. The Model 1894 was available in the same calibers as its predecessor, along with the addition of .25-20 and later, .218 Bee.

The Model 1894 and its later variants gained popularity in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where harsh weather conditions often caused top-eject designs to freeze. During the Klondike Gold Rush, many prospectors favored the solid-top design of the Marlin, as it effectively kept freezing rain, snow, and dirt out of the action’s operating components in extreme temperatures. Later models were designated as "Model 94."
