Winchester introduced the Model 1894 in October 1894, initially as a Sporting Rifle with various barrel configurations. Shortly after, the Saddle Ring Carbine (SRC) was introduced, featuring a 20-inch round barrel and a saddle ring on the receiver. Saddle rings were standard on carbines from 1894 to 1932, but could be omitted as a special order option, such as this example!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1894 Carbine in .38-55 WCF is a classic example of one of the most iconic lever-action rifles in American history. Designed by John Browning and introduced in 1894, the Model 1894 became synonymous with reliability, craftsmanship, and the rugged spirit of the American frontier. This particular carbine variant features a 20-inch round barrel, a blade front sight with an adjustable rear sight, and a smooth straight-grip walnut stock, embodying the timeless design that has made the Model 94 a favorite among hunters and collectors for over a century. The lever-action mechanism, renowned for its smooth cycling and quick follow-up shots, makes this rifle well-suited for both hunting and sport shooting. Finished in a deep blue, this example remains true to the rifle’s traditional aesthetic while offering durability against wear and corrosion.

Chambered in .38-55 WCF, one of the original calibers introduced with the Model 1894, this rifle holds a special historical significance. The .38-55 Winchester Center Fire cartridge, originally developed as a black powder round, was well known for its accuracy, moderate recoil, and effectiveness on medium to large game, making it a favored choice among hunters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This particular Model 1894 Carbine represents a continuation of the legacy of the "Eastern" Carbine, a term coined by collectors to describe Winchester’s carbines produced without the traditional saddle ring—a feature that was once standard on all carbines but was gradually phased out between 1928 and 1932. Though Winchester never officially referred to them as "Eastern" Carbines, they were produced in large numbers for the eastern U.S. market, where the saddle ring was less necessary. As one of the most successful and enduring lever-action rifles ever produced, the Winchester Model 1894 remains an integral part of firearms history, and this .38-55 WCF variant continues to embody the craftsmanship and performance that defined the golden age of lever-action rifles.
