Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 1893 (later designated the Model 93) was introduced in 1893 as an improved, lengthened version of the earlier Hepburn action, designed to handle both traditional black-powder cartridges such as the .32-40 and .38-55 and, importantly, the new smokeless rounds like the .30-30 Winchester and .25-36 Marlin, making it among the first Marlins specifically built with smokeless-capable barrels. It featured a solid-top forged steel receiver with side ejection for improved weather resistance, a redesigned bolt lockup, and a two-piece firing pin for added safety. Over its long production run—lasting until about 1935—it was offered in both rifle and carbine configurations with numerous barrel lengths (round or octagon) and walnut stock styles, along with markings being evolved in stages: “Special Smokeless Steel” began appearing on barrels to distinguish smokeless-rated guns, while earlier examples were often marked “For Black Powder".
