Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Although its service life was brief, the Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jørgensen, commonly known as the "Krag," remains one of the more intriguing vintage military rifles. The Krag was chambered for the U.S. military's first smokeless powder cartridge, a controversial choice since the design was not American, leading to heated debates and even lawsuits from outraged engineers. While it was praised for balancing the roles of a repeater and a single-shot rifle (thanks to its magazine cutoff), the Krag ultimately proved inferior in combat and is recognized as the shortest-lived military longarm in U.S. history. Around 750,000 Krags were produced globally, with approximately 500,000 made at Springfield Armory. The rifle evolved through various models, starting with the M1892 and advancing to the M1896, M1898, and M1899, available in several configurations, including rifle, carbine, cadet rifle, and constable carbine. After the adoption of the Springfield 1903, Krags were quickly decommissioned and sold as surplus, making them widely available and affordable in the early 20th century. Many were "sporterized," with stocks and barrels modified for hunting. The Model 1898 rifle showcased here is one such sporterized version. For decades, these modified Krags served as popular hunting tools, and even today, you can still find them in the used gun market.
