Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Waffenfabrik Mauser Model M96 is a classic long rifle from the renowned Swedish Mauser family, chambered in the highly accurate and ballistically efficient 6.5×55mm Swedish cartridge. This particular example features a 29-inch blued barrel, a smooth hardwood stock, and the characteristic bolt-action system that made Swedish Mausers prized for both military service and civilian marksmanship. Manufactured in Germany by Mauser AG in Oberndorf around the turn of the 20th century, the M96 was built to exacting standards using Swedish-supplied high-grade steel alloyed with nickel, copper, and vanadium—materials prized for strength and corrosion resistance. The result is a rifle that is not only historically significant but also mechanically refined. The M96's ladder-style rear sight and dovetail blade front were calibrated for the original m/94 round-nosed ammunition, with the rear sight capable of ranging from 300 to 2,000 meters—though the extended range settings were intended for volley fire rather than individual precision. The rifle features a "cock-on-closing" bolt design and lacks the third safety lug found on later Mauser models, keeping it consistent with other pre-Gewehr 98 Mausers and giving it a smoother, faster cycling action. Feeding from a 5-round internal magazine, the M96 was designed for both single loading and rapid reloading via stripper clips, aided by a crescent-shaped thumb cutout for easier operation. With a production run that spanned several decades and multiple manufacturers—including Carl Gustafs and Husqvarna—over half a million M96 rifles were built. The Waffenfabrik-marked variants, like this one, represent the early German-produced examples and are sought after for their exceptional craftsmanship and place in military firearms history.
