Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1890 chambered in .22 Winchester Rim Fire (W.R.F.) is a classic example of early American firearms engineering and one of the most successful rimfire rifles ever produced. This particular rifle features a 24-inch octagon barrel with a deep blue finish, a blade front sight, and an adjustable U-notch rear sight—providing both period-correct aesthetics and practical accuracy for small game hunting or target shooting. Its smooth walnut buttstock and ribbed forearm reflect Winchester’s attention to detail and durability, while the pump-action design offers the smooth cycling that made the Model 1890 a favorite among sportsmen and shooting galleries alike. The rifle's design is both simple and effective, with top ejection and an 18-inch under-barrel magazine tube capable of feeding .22 W.R.F. cartridges—a more powerful alternative to the standard .22 Short or .22 Long Rifle rounds of its day. Designed by John and Matthew Browning and patented in 1888, the Winchester Model 1890 was introduced as a replacement for the less successful rimfire versions of the Model 1873. It quickly earned a reputation for reliability, accuracy, and robust construction. With over 849,000 units produced between 1890 and 1932, and a final parts cleanup extending into 1941, the Model 1890 became synonymous with American shooting culture. It was especially common in fairground shooting galleries, giving rise to its nickname—the "gallery gun." The .22 W.R.F. chambering adds another layer of collectibility, as it was a premium option in the early 20th century, offering flatter trajectories and improved performance over other rimfire variants. Today, surviving examples like this one are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts not only for their historical significance but also for their enduring craftsmanship and mechanical precision.
