According to the letter from Aurum Etchings and Engraving Company, Inc., President Samuel Shortes, this Single Action Army, with serial number 215699, was originally sold to a hardware store in Abilene, Kansas. Samuel Shortes acquired it in the mid-1970s in Dallas, Texas, and subsequently added it to the Aurum Etchings collection, which was primarily owned by Colt Industries. At some point prior to this, the front sight had been modified, and the gun was nickel-plated. In the mid-1980s, it was returned to the Colt Custom Shop, where the original front sight was reinstalled, and the original blued finish was restored. This restoration was conducted under the personal supervision of the legendary Al de John, the superintendent of the Custom Shop, who retired in 1989. The work was carried out as a personal favor for the gun's owner, Samuel Shortes.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (also known as the Model P, Peacemaker, M1873, Single Action Army, SAA, ) is a single-action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1873 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, today Colt’s Manufacturing Company, and adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892. It is perhaps the most copied, fraudulently modified to replicate an original Colt SAA, than any other revolver made. For nearly all of the past 138 years, Colt’s of Hartford, Conn., has made the Single Action Army revolver in many barrel lengths, calibers, finishes, and styles; one of the more popular variations is the so-called Sheriff’s Model. The first were made in the 19th century and were known at the Hartford factory as the “ejectorless” Single Actions. The Sheriff’s Model terminology came from latter-day collectors, who also sometimes used the term “Storekeeper’s Model.”

The Single Action Army revolver was offered in standard barrel lengths of 4 3/4 inch, 5 1/2 inch, and the original 7 1/2 inch Cavalry standard, with the shorter barrels sometimes referred to as the "Civilian" or "Gunfighter" model (4 3/4 inch) and the Artillery Model (5 1/2 inch). A variant with a sub-4-inch barrel, lacking an ejector rod, was unofficially known as the "Sheriff's Model," "Banker's Special," or "Storekeeper." From 1875 to 1880, Colt marketed a single-action revolver chambered in .44 Henry, with serial numbers ranging from 1 to 1,863. The "Flattop Target Model" was included in Colt's catalogs from 1890 to 1898, with 914 units manufactured featuring a flat-top frame and adjustable leaf rear sight, along with an interchangeable front sight blade. In 1896, at serial number 164,100, a spring-loaded base pin latch replaced the cylinder pin retaining screw, and by 1900, the Colt Single Action was certified for smokeless powder use. In 1920, larger, more visible sights replaced the original thin blade and notch, with the revolver remaining largely unchanged until production ceased at the beginning of World War II. From 1873 to 1940, including a few assembled during and after the war, production reached 357,859 units, known as the "Pre-War" or "First Generation." These revolvers were chambered in over thirty calibers, with approximately half (158,884, including Bisley and Flat Top Target variations) in .45 Colt, followed by .44-40 Winchester (71,392), .38-40 (50,520), .32-20 Winchester (43,284), and .41 Colt (19,676).
