Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1880s, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company commissioned John Moses Browning and his brother Matthew to design a replacement for the .22-caliber version of the Model 1873, which had never gained widespread popularity. On June 26, 1888, U.S. Patent No. 385,238 was granted for their new design. Under this patent, Winchester produced the second successful .22-caliber pump-action repeating rifle, narrowly preceded by the Colt Lightning small-frame carbine. Introduced in November 1890, the Winchester Model 1890 quickly became the company’s most successful repeating rimfire rifle, widely used for general shooting and earning the nickname “gallery gun” for its popularity in shooting galleries and carnival ranges. Approximately 849,000 rifles were produced between 1890 and 1932, with the remaining stock sold off through 1941. The Model 1890 was manufactured in three distinct versions. The First Model featured a solid frame, a case-hardened receiver, and a fixed rear sight, with about 15,000 rifles produced between 1890 and 1892 (serial numbers 1 to approximately 15,552). The Second Model introduced a takedown design and added an adjustable rear sight; about 100,000 of these were made with case-hardened frames (serials 15,553 to 112,970), followed by roughly 200,000 rifles with blue receivers (serials 112,971 to 325,250).

A deluxe version of the Second Model offered a checkered walnut stock in either straight or pistol grip configuration, along with a grooved slide handle. The Third Model continued as a takedown rifle but featured a modified receiver that allowed external locking of the breech bolt. It was produced from serial number 325,251 to approximately 854,747 and was also available in a deluxe version similar to that of the Second Model. In April 1919, Winchester simplified its model naming system by dropping the “18” and “19” prefixes, resulting in the Model 1890 being renamed the Model 90, a designation that remained in use for the remainder of the rifle’s production.
