Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 1890 is notable for its takedown feature, which allows for easy disassembly and transportation—a practical addition for users of the time. The rifle's design included an 18-inch magazine tube under the barrel, which contributed to its balance and ease of use. Approximately 849,000 units of the Model 1890 were produced between 1890 and 1932, establishing it as one of the most successful repeating rimfire rifles ever made by Winchester. The rifle was highly regarded in shooting galleries, earning the nickname "gallery gun" due to its popularity in such settings. The second model of the 1890, which this example represents, originally featured a case-hardened receiver, though it was later updated to a blued version in August 1901. Out of the total production, about 100,000 second-model rifles were made with case-hardened receivers, and around 200,000 were produced with blued receivers. The Model 1890 was eventually succeeded by the Winchester Model 62 in 1932, with the final cleanup of stock completed in 1941.

Its varied calibers, including .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle, and .22 Winchester Rimfire, highlight the rifle’s versatility, although each model was specific to its designated caliber. The Model 1890’s enduring legacy as a versatile and reliable rifle is a testament to its design and the innovative spirit of John Browning.
