Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Pocket revolver marked a major turning point in Colt’s double-action revolver development when it was introduced in 1895. It was Colt’s first successful small-frame, swing-out cylinder, double-action design, and the basic mechanical layout became the foundation for nearly every Colt double-action revolver produced through 1969. Intended as a compact, easily concealable sidearm, the New Pocket was significantly smaller than the medium-frame New Army & Navy revolvers and was chambered for lower-pressure .32-caliber cartridges suitable for personal defense. Its improved lockwork was simpler, stronger, and more reliable than earlier Colt designs, contributing greatly to its immediate popularity with both police departments and civilian buyers.

Chambered in .32 Short Colt, .32 Long Colt, and .32 Colt New Police (interchangeable with the .32 S&W Long), the New Pocket offered versatility in an era of rapidly evolving handgun cartridges. It was available in bright blue or bright nickel finishes and produced with barrel lengths ranging from 2½" to 6", allowing buyers to tailor the revolver to concealment or service use. Standard features included fixed sights and hard black rubber grips with molded checkering and Colt logos. Manufactured from 1895 to 1905, the Colt New Pocket is historically significant as the first in a lineage of Colt revolvers that would dominate the American police market for decades, and it remains a highly regarded example of early modern revolver engineering.
