Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Model 1899B in .38-55 WCF is a beautifully crafted, historically significant lever-action rifle that represents the evolution of American firearms at the turn of the 20th century. Featuring a 26-inch octagon barrel and a rich blued finish, the 1899B combines aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. It comes equipped with a traditional blade front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear sight, but also includes a factory-installed Lyman peep hole rear sight—an advanced feature for its time that significantly enhances sight alignment and target acquisition. This setup offers precision aiming for hunters and marksmen alike, making the rifle especially well-suited for medium- to long-range shooting. Its smooth, straight grip stock and crescent steel buttplate reflect classic styling, while providing a comfortable and solid shoulder fit. Like all models in the 1899 family, the B model utilizes Savage’s innovative hammerless lever-action design, which not only improved safety but also allowed for quicker and more reliable cycling.

At the core of the Model 1899’s engineering success is its distinctive rotary magazine—a pioneering advancement that safely accommodates pointed (spitzer) bullets, a rarity among lever-action rifles of its era. Chambered in the venerable .38-55 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) cartridge, the rifle delivers excellent performance for both hunting and target shooting. Originally developed as a black powder cartridge in the late 19th century, the .38-55 evolved with the adoption of smokeless powder and found widespread popularity in various rifles, including the Winchester Model 1894 and Marlin’s 1893. The cartridge is known for its accuracy, mild recoil, and reliable terminal ballistics, making it a favorite for deer and other medium-sized game. With its superior build quality, historical provenance, and practical features like the factory Lyman peep sight, the Savage 1899B stands as both a functional sporting rifle and a collector's gem, embodying the transitional era of firearms innovation in America.
