Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1890 Second Model Takedown rifle chambered in .22 Short is a fine example of early American firearms innovation and craftsmanship. Designed by the legendary John Moses Browning, this model was developed to provide a reliable and accurate alternative to the less successful rimfire versions of the Model 1873. This particular example features a 24-inch octagonal barrel, finished in deep blue, paired with a smooth walnut buttstock and ribbed forearm. It is equipped with a blade front sight and an adjustable U-notch rear, allowing for fine-tuned accuracy—qualities that made it a staple in shooting galleries across the country. As a takedown model, it also offers the added convenience of easy disassembly for transport and maintenance.

The Second Model was introduced as an improvement over the First Model, incorporating a case-hardened receiver in early examples and later transitioning to a blued finish, as seen on this rifle. With production spanning a relatively short period and fewer than 325,250 examples made, these rifles hold a special place in Winchester’s legacy. Chambered in .22 Short, the Model 1890 was widely used for recreational target shooting and became synonymous with American shooting galleries of the early 20th century, earning its nickname “gallery gun.” Its smooth pump-action operation, durable construction, and elegant design have made it a sought-after collectible. The Winchester Model 1890 not only represents a significant achievement in firearms history but also showcases the enduring appeal of Browning's mechanical ingenuity.
