The Colt New Police, introduced in 1896, was one of Colt’s early double-action revolvers and played a significant role in law enforcement history. Essentially an adaptation of the Colt New Pocket, the New Police featured a longer, square butt for improved grip and handling. It was chambered in .32 Colt and .32 Colt New Police, with barrel length options of 2.5, 4, and 6 inches. This particular example, with its 4-inch barrel and nickel finish, exemplifies the durable and refined craftsmanship that made Colt revolvers highly regarded during this era. The Colt New Police holds a place of distinction in American policing history as the first officially issued sidearm of the New York Police Department, a decision made by then NYPD Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt. Available in both bright blue and bright nickel finishes, the New Police was designed for reliability and ease of use. Production continued until 1907, after which it was succeeded by newer designs. A notable variant, the Colt New Police Target, featured an extended 6-inch barrel and target sights, making it the first swing-out cylinder target revolver produced by Colt.
