Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Schmidt–Rubin Model 1896/11, produced by the Swiss state arms factory Waffenfabrik Bern (W+F Bern), was a major upgrade of the earlier Model 1889/96 rifles, carried out between approximately 1912 and 1920 to adapt existing arms to the newly introduced 7.5×55 mm GP11 cartridge. The GP11 featured a Spitzer bullet with a higher muzzle velocity of around 780 m/s and significantly improved ballistics over the older GP90 round. The 1896 action was already strong enough to handle the GP11’s increased chamber pressures, unlike the weaker 1889 model, which made large-scale conversion practical. Upgrades included fitting a new four-groove rifled barrel, modifying the rear sight for the GP11’s flatter trajectory, grafting a semi-pistol grip onto the original straight stock for better ergonomics, and replacing the original 12-round magazine with a more compact six-round detachable version. Approximately 135,000 rifles underwent this conversion, resulting in a weapon closely resembling the later 1911 Infantry Rifle but retaining identifiable differences such as the grafted grip piece, flat upper buttstock profile, and subtle variations in the magazine housing.

Many rifles marked as 1896/11 were originally manufactured years earlier—often in the early 1900s or even the late 1890s—in their original 1889/96 configuration, and were only later updated during the 1912–1920 conversion program. Retaining the Schmidt–Rubin series’ signature smooth straight-pull bolt action, the 1896/11 offered excellent reliability and precision, remaining in Swiss militia service well into the mid-20th century.
