Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1890 Third Model Takedown is a classic example of American firearm ingenuity from the turn of the 20th century, representing the apex of slide-action rimfire rifle design. Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, this particular model is chambered in .22 Short and features a 24-inch octagon barrel finished in blue. It comes equipped with a dovetail blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight, offering precise target acquisition. The rifle features a smooth walnut straight grip stock complemented by a ribbed forend, enhancing both aesthetics and handling. Its takedown design makes for easy disassembly and transport, a feature that was particularly appealing to hunters and marksmen seeking portability and convenience. The pump-action mechanism, a defining trait of the Model 1890, allows for reliable cycling and earned the rifle a reputation for durability and performance in both field use and shooting galleries. Introduced in 1890 and designed by the legendary John Browning, the Winchester Model 1890 was created to replace the less successful rimfire version of the Model 1873. It quickly became one of the most successful repeating rimfire rifles of its era, with over 849,000 units produced until its eventual replacement by the Model 62 in 1932. The third model, which this rifle represents, was an evolution of the original design and included a revised receiver with an externally locking breech bolt. This model was particularly favored for its robustness and accuracy, solidifying its role in both recreational shooting and small game hunting. The fact that the Model 1890 was widely used in shooting galleries earned it the affectionate nickname “gallery gun,” and its reputation for reliability and craftsmanship continues to make it a sought-after collector’s piece today.
