Item Description

Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this unique double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Transitional New Police/Police Positive!

The Colt Police Positive .32, introduced in 1907, is an evolution of the earlier Colt New Police revolver. The dual markings “Colt's New Police” and “Police Positive” on the frame indicate its unique production history, as it was made using leftover parts from the New Police line—a practice attributed to Sam Colt’s resourceful manufacturing methods. These New Police-marked frames were used in the Police Positive from 1907 to about 1909, providing a general timeframe for your revolver’s manufacture. The Police Positive .32 was designed to chamber a variety of cartridges, including the .32 Long and Short Colt, the .32 Colt New Police, and the .32 S&W, making it versatile for users. Its compact design and robust construction made it popular among both law enforcement and civilians, reflecting the practical needs of its time while showcasing Colt’s commitment to innovation.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Police is a double-action, six-shot revolver that can also be fired in single-action mode, chambered primarily for the .32 New Police cartridge, which closely resembles the .32 S&W Long. Manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1896 to 1907, the revolver features fixed sights with a round blade in front and a grooved rear sight. Buyers could choose from three barrel lengths—2.5 inches, four inches, or six inches—and finishes in blued or nickel, with hard rubber grips. Notably, in 1896, New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt selected the Colt New Police as the first standard-issue revolver for NYPD officers. A target version with a six-inch barrel and adjustable sights was produced in 1905. In 1907, the New Police was succeeded by the Colt Police Positive, which offered enhancements such as an internal hammer block safety and improved lock work.

The Colt Police Positive is a small-frame, double-action revolver featuring a six-round cylinder, available in .32 or .38 caliber, with a .22 caliber model also offered. Introduced by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1905, it was designed primarily for sale to law enforcement agencies. The Police Positive improved upon Colt's earlier New Police revolver by incorporating an internal hammer block safety, named the "Positive Lock," which contributed to its nomenclature. Notably, the cylinder of the Police Positive rotates clockwise, unlike competing models from Smith & Wesson, a detail Colt capitalized on in its marketing. The company highlighted this feature by proclaiming, "All Colt cylinders TURN TO THE RIGHT," suggesting that this design provided a tighter lockup and improved chamber-to-barrel alignment, ultimately enhancing accuracy. The Police Positive was highly successful and, alongside the Colt Official Police, dominated the law enforcement firearms market in the early 1900s. In 1908, the Police Positive underwent incremental modifications, paving the way for the Colt Police Positive Special model.
