Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1905 was an American self-loading rifle designed by T.C. Johnson in 1901 and manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1905 to 1920. The first iteration of the upscaled Winchester self-loading rifle, the Model 1905 was essentially a scaled-up version of the Model 1903 he also designed. The Model 1905 was based on patents filed in 1901 by T.C. Johnson, a longstanding employee of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The weapon that became of this patent was the Model 1903, the first semi-automatic firearm commercially sold by the company.
For some reason, Johnson decided to scale up his action to fit a new semi-automatic rifle; this would become the Model 1905. At launch, the Model 1905 was chambered for two calibers: .32 Winchester Self-Loading and .35 Winchester Self-Loading, which was necessary due to the weapon's blowback action being carried over from the Model 1903.
The Model 1905 was not as successful as Winchester had hoped, mainly due to the underpowered cartridges it used. While the weapon did enjoy some popularity with law enforcement agencies, the Model 1905 was ultimately not a commercial success. Production ended in 1920 with some 29,113 produced, with the rifle being superseded by the far more commercially successful Model 1907 some two years later.
