Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1889, Colt revolutionized revolver design with the introduction of the world's first double action, swing-out cylinder revolver. This groundbreaking innovation marked a significant departure from the single-action, top-break revolver designs prevalent at the time. Immediately embraced by the US Navy as the Model of 1889 and subsequently adopted by the US Army in 1892 as the Model of 1892, Colt's creation quickly garnered popularity among civilians as well.
Colt's commitment to innovation was evident in the rapid succession of design upgrades, resulting in a series of models: 1889, 1892, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1901, and 1903. Each iteration brought refinements and improvements, culminating in a diverse range of commercial models offered in blue, bright nickel, and various barrel lengths and calibers. The military models, distinguished by their blue finish and smooth walnut grips, bore serial numbers on the butt alongside military stamps, while commercial variants featured assembly numbers until a final serial was assigned.
The complexity of these early double-action revolvers, particularly the New Army & Navy model, posed operational challenges exacerbated by delicate internal mechanisms prone to misalignment or breakage. Consequently, finding skilled gunsmiths willing to undertake repairs became increasingly rare, underscoring the need for cautious handling and maintenance of these historic firearms.
