Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this century-old autoloading repeating rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Remington Model 8!

The Remington Model 8 holds historical significance as the platform that introduced Remington’s line of rimless cartridges, including the .25, .30, .32, and the powerful .35 Remington. While the first three mirrored the ballistics of Winchester’s popular lever-action rounds, the .35 Remington stood out as a unique offering—and remains commercially available today. This makes Model 8 rifles chambered in .35 Remington especially desirable for shooters seeking accessible factory ammunition.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 8, designed by the legendary John Moses Browning, is a historically significant semi-automatic rifle that marked a major advancement in firearms technology. Introduced in 1906 and manufactured by Remington Arms until 1936, the Model 8 was the first commercially successful semi-automatic centerfire rifle. Its long-recoil operation system—where both the barrel and bolt recoil together before cycling—was innovative at the time and influenced future rifle designs. Chambered in proprietary rimless calibers such as .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remington, the rifle featured an internal box magazine (loaded via stripper clip), solid steel receiver, and a distinctive fixed barrel shroud that housed the recoiling barrel. The Model 8 quickly gained a reputation for rugged reliability and was marketed for sporting use, especially deer and large game hunting in North America.

Beyond its commercial success, the Model 8 found a niche in law enforcement and even some military circles due to its firepower and fast follow-up shot capability—a novelty in an era dominated by bolt-action rifles and lever guns. One of the most famous uses of the Model 8 was by legendary Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who used a modified version in .35 Remington during the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde. Despite being eclipsed by more modern designs over time, the Model 8 remains an important milestone in firearms history. Its elegant walnut stock, exposed hammer, and robust mechanical design make it a collectible among vintage rifle enthusiasts and a testament to Browning’s genius in firearms innovation.
