The Colt Police Positive Special was an evolution of the original Police Positive, featuring a lengthened frame and cylinder to accommodate more powerful cartridges, most notably the .38 Special. This model became the foundation for all of Colt’s small-frame revolvers, remaining in production in various forms until the last units were discontinued in 1995. Its combination of compact size, lighter weight, and powerful .38 Special capability made it extremely popular with police departments and civilian shooters alike. Produced from 1907 to 1995, the Police Positive Special spawned more variations than any other Colt double-action revolver. The First Issue models were available in bright blue or bright nickel finishes. Early grips, from 1907 to 1923, were hard black rubber, which was later replaced by checkered walnut with silver medallions. Barrel lengths included 4", 5", and 6", while available calibers ranged from .32-20, .32 New Police, .38 New Police (.38 S&W), to the more powerful .38 Special. The initial production run of the First Issue spanned 1907 to 1927.
