Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1903 was an American .22 caliber self-loading rifle designed by T.C. Johnson in 1901 and manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1903 to 1933. The first iteration of the Winchester self-loading rifle, the Model 1903 is notable as being the first semi-automatic rifle produced by Winchester in any significant quantity.
The Model 1903 was designed in 1901 by T.C. Johnson, a longstanding employee of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The weapon that became of this patent was the Model 1903, the first semi-automatic firearm commercially sold by the company. In the 1930s, however, the Model 1903 was falling out of popularity mainly due to its use of a proprietary cartridge which was the only cartridge it could use for it to chamber properly.
As such, a replacement had to be made; the replacement for the weapon was known as the Model 63, which is generally the same weapon except chambered for the far more ubiquitous .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Production ended in 1933 with some 122,974 produced, with a few more produced until 1936 due to part clearing.
