Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Arms Co. Model 1907 Auto Pistol is one of the most iconic early 20th-century American handguns, blending innovative design with strong commercial success. Introduced in .32 ACP in 1907 and later offered in .380 ACP, the Model 1907 was a striker-fired, blowback-operated semi-automatic pistol with a unique and compact profile that made it especially appealing for civilian and police markets. Its most notable feature was its double-stack, staggered-column magazine, which gave the pistol an impressive 10-round capacity in .32 ACP—a remarkable advantage at the time, when most competitors offered only 6 or 7 rounds. Savage heavily promoted this pistol with the famous slogan “Ten Shots Quick!” which emphasized both its firepower and fast-shooting capabilities. The pistol’s sleek lines, absence of an external hammer, and ergonomic grip angle helped it stand out in a crowded marketplace of early automatics. It also featured a unique rotating striker and manual safety lever located on the side of the frame, giving it mechanical innovations that appealed to forward-thinking buyers in the early 1900s. The Model 1907 quickly became a popular choice among civilians, law enforcement, and even the U.S. military. During World War I, approximately 20,000 units were purchased by the U.S. Army in .32 ACP as supplemental sidearms, making it one of the few American semi-automatics to see service in the conflict alongside the Colt M1911. Its lightweight design, excellent capacity, and ease of concealment made it a practical choice for officers, military personnel, and police, while its Art Deco-inspired styling appealed to civilians during the golden age of pocket pistols. Production continued until 1920, with around 235,000 examples manufactured, and the pistol went through multiple small design changes—often referred to as variations—that are of particular interest to collectors today. While not as widely remembered as the Colt 1911 or Browning designs, the Savage Model 1907 is considered a landmark firearm for its innovation, distinctive advertising campaigns, and real-world service history. Collectors prize these pistols for their unique combination of mechanical ingenuity, stylish design, and their role as both a civilian favorite and a military sidearm during a pivotal era in firearms development.
