A pump-action centerfire rifle was a rather unconventional choice to rival the dominant lever-action firearms of the era. Most hunters gravitated toward the reliable, easy-to-use lever-action repeaters from Winchester, Marlin, and Savage. In an effort to distinguish itself, Remington launched the semi-automatic Model 8 in 1906—designed by the legendary John Browning—along with a set of new proprietary cartridges. Despite its innovation, the Model 8 saw limited commercial success. Remington soon realized that a manually operated rifle might appeal more to traditional hunters. Since Winchester had a firm grip on the lever-action market, Remington took a different path by developing a sleek pump-action rifle chambered in the same four calibers as the Model 8.

This led to the creation of the Model 14, which featured several innovative design elements. Chief among them was a spiral magazine tube, crafted to prevent bullet tips from contacting the primers of adjacent cartridges. The tube moved in tandem with the fore-end when the action was cycled. Loading was done through an opening in the magazine itself, situated between the fore-end and the receiver. The bolt could be manually unlocked by pressing a button through the ejection port, although firing the rifle would also automatically release it. The Model 14 was also designed for easy disassembly. A single knurled screw on the left side of the receiver allowed the trigger group and buttstock to be detached from the lower assembly, making it a true takedown rifle. Thanks to its innovative features and solid performance, the Remington Model 14 earned a strong following among hunters and proved to be quite popular in the field.
