Manufactured in 1915 and undoubtedly at the beginning of manufacture of the Woodsman pistols. The pistol was shipped to Mr Frank Schirmer, the then Treasurer and Memeber of the board of directors of Colt. The top of the pencil thin barrel is marked with the two-line address/1903 patent date, the left side of the slide is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CAL. 22 LONG RIFLE", the Rampant Colt is marked on the left rear of the slide behind the serrations, and the serial number is marked on the front strap. Standard elevation adjustable front blade sight, windage adjustable rear sight, smooth trigger, "CAL. 22/COLT" marked two-tone magazine and checkered walnut grips with a diamond around the screw. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber and barrel length with the grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 to Mr. Frank Schirmer, "Treasurer and Board of Directors Member of Colt from 1901-1921", on May 31st, 1916.
Mr Frank Schirmer, was the Treasurer of Colt and served on Colt’s board of directors from 1901 until 1921 and was a principal in the original acquisition of the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company by the Boston and New York financial house of Armstrong & Schirmer in June 1901. The Colt Woodsman sprang from a design by John Moses Browning and was refined by gunsmiths and designers at Colt's before its introduction in 1915. Browning had developed the Woodsman with a short slide, no grip safety and no hammer. These features were in place on his Model 1903 and 1911 designs, however in his opinion, a handgun that was intended for target use did not require them.
