Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The DWM Artillery P.08 Luger, commonly referred to as the “Artillery Luger,” is a long-barreled variant of the standard P.08 pistol developed by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in the years leading up to the First World War. Introduced in 1914, it was intended to provide German artillery and support troops with a sidearm offering increased sight radius and improved accuracy at extended ranges. The Artillery Luger is distinguished by its 8-inch barrel, tangent rear sight graduated to 800 meters, and the ability to accept a detachable wooden shoulder stock/holster, effectively transforming the pistol into a compact carbine. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, it retained the classic toggle-lock action that made the Luger renowned for its precision and distinctive operation.

From a historical and collector standpoint, the DWM Artillery P.08 holds a prominent place among early 20th-century military handguns. Many examples saw service during World War I, and original pistols with matching serial numbers, intact long barrels, and correct tangent sights are especially desirable today. Those accompanied by original matching stock/holsters are considered particularly scarce and command significant premiums. Beyond its mechanical elegance, the Artillery Luger represents an early attempt to extend the effective role of a service pistol, bridging the gap between handgun and carbine. Its combination of historical significance, distinctive configuration, and association with Imperial Germany has made it one of the most sought-after variants within the broader Luger collecting community.
